Radiation Detection: Updating the Geiger Counter

In cartoons, radioactive materials radioactive materials are extremely easy to spot, much like the fuel rod in the opening of The Simpsons -- bright green and glowing. Unfortunately, reality is nothing like cartoons, and radiation does not often have easy-to-spot characteristics. 

Rather than look for the tell-tale glow, security and screening professionals rely on the alarm of highly-tuned radiation detectors to alert them to radioactive materials.
