Nuclear terrorism is one of the most serious threats to global security. In the last two decades almost 2,500 incidents of trafficking radioactive material have been reported to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) by member states. Even just a small quantity of radioactive material can cause significant radiation contamination when part of a dirty bomb.
To combat the evolving threat environment, we have added radiation detection capability to our Metor walk-through metal detectors (WTMD). The integration of radiation detection to our WTMD provides operators the ability to screen for threats like radioactive materials and hazardous contraband at the same time, making the process seamless. Such integration provides additional security without increasing the footprint or personnel requirements of a checkpoint.
Curious how it works? During people screening the radiation detection system detects gamma radiation from radioactive materials used in commercial and medical applications, as well as Special Nuclear Materials. Because the radiation inspection system is integrated with the metal detector, dense metal shielding used to contain gamma radiation will be detected by the WTMD, even if the shielding is sufficient to thwart the radiation detection system.
