Rapiscan is used to find radioactive material | Rapiscan Systems

Rapiscan Technology Advances the Nuclear Security Summit Agenda

April 01, 2016 Torrance, CA

Nuclear terrorism is a real threat. This week, Washington, DC is hosting the 2016 Nuclear Security Summit, which brings together world leaders from more than 50 countries, hundreds of CEOs, industry leaders, and international organizations to show the highest levels of commitment to nuclear security (www.nss2016.org). There is global concern because today’s terrorists do not need special nuclear materials, such as uranium and plutonium, to create chaos. A small quantity of radioactive material that is routinely and safely employed in medical and industrial applications can cause significant radiation contamination to a wide area when part of a dirty bomb. Additionally, for the metal recycling industry and general public, a major risk is contamination by “orphan” radioactive sources, which could become mixed with scrap metal resulting in radioactive products that can cause significant economic damage and public health concerns. Rapiscan Systems radiation detection products are valuable tools to counter these types of threats (www.rapiscansystems.com).

Rapiscan has solutions. Rapiscan’s broad range of radiation detection products meets the technical and operational requirements of our customers’ radiation inspection applications. Radiation monitors are easily networked and remotely managed with Rapiscan’s TSA RAVEN™ (Radiation Alarm and Video Event Notification) communications software, which collects, displays, and archives data and CCTV video images required to support the response to radiation alarms. The versatile product line can be combined with other Rapiscan security screening products to deliver a multilayered, fully integrated solution that provides additional security without increasing the footprint or personnel requirements of a checkpoint.

Rapiscan is a proven industry leader. Whether the requirement calls for the scanning of sea-borne or air cargo containers, personnel as they cross borders or pass through a security checkpoint, or the scanning of cars, trucks and other vehicles, Rapiscan has a range of proven solutions for our customers. Our equipment is also deployed at nuclear power plants, laboratories, and government buildings for security and can be used to find radioactive material in the metal processing and recycling industries for safety. Additionally, transportable radiation monitors support military missions and law enforcement applications at public gatherings, such as political events, sporting contests, and concerts. Rapiscan’s radiation detection systems enhance security and counter smuggling of radioactive material, which advances the Nuclear Security Summit agenda.

Rapiscan Launches MP100 Backpack Radiation Detection System | Rapiscan Systems

Rapiscan Launches MP100 Backpack Radiation Detection System

February 10, 2016 Torrance, CA

High performance solution allows for covert detection of radioactive materials

Rapiscan Systems, a leading global supplier of security inspection systems, today announced the expansion of its radiation detection product line to include the Rapiscan MP100 Backpack radiation detection system. The MP100 is a lightweight, high performance solution that can detect radiological and nuclear materials and is housed within a compact commercial backpack, making it ideal for covert radiation inspection.

President Obama has cited the danger of a terrorist acquiring nuclear weapons as “the most immediate and extreme threat to global security,” and U.S. Customs and Border Protection has indicated that “nuclear and radiological materials are of particular concern because of their potential to harm large numbers of people and disrupt the U.S. economy.”  In fact, over the last two decades more than 2,500 incidents of trafficking radioactive material have been reported to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) by member states.

The MP100 Backpack radiation detection system is designed for ease of operation and makes radiation detection as easy as simply walking around. It includes a long battery life that supports extended deployment, as well as the following additional features:

·       Gamma and optional neutron radiation detection. The MP100’s PVT gamma radiation detectors detect gamma radiation emitted by medical and industrial isotopes, which can be used in a dirty bomb. They also detect Special Nuclear Materials, such as uranium and plutonium, which are needed for a nuclear weapon. The addition of optional Boron-10 neutron radiation detectors enables the MP100 to detect Special Nuclear Materials that are shielded, such as in a dense metal container.

·       Meets U.S. and international standards. The radiation detection performance of the MP100 meets the requirements of U.S. and international standards for backpack radiation monitors. The U.S. standard, ANSI N42.53, and its international equivalent, IEC 62694, address homeland security concerns and illicit trafficking inspection applications.

·       Integrates with Android mobile devices. The MP100 can be operated as a standalone radiation monitor with alarms signaled audibly in the operator’s earpiece. Alternatively, the MP100 can connect wirelessly to a mobile Android device, such as a smartphone or tablet, running the free Rapiscan RadViewer app. With its intuitive graphical user interface, Rapiscan’s RadViewer presents a wealth of information about radiation measurements and alarms and helps direct the operator to a radiation source.

“Today’s terrorists don’t need special nuclear materials, such as uranium and plutonium, to create chaos. A small quantity of radioactive material that is routinely and safely employed in medical and industrial applications can cause significant radiation contamination to a wide area when part of a dirty bomb,” said Pak Chin, president of Rapiscan Systems. “The MP100 applies Rapiscan design principles and technology to a practical, high performing, portable radiation detection solution that is suitable for a variety of use cases. It’s one of the lightest and easiest to use systems available today.”

The MP100 was designed for many different applications. Operators can use the solution to inspect areas where crowds have gathered for an event, such as stadiums or arenas; to detect radioactive material at mass transit stations and vehicle checkpoints; and to protect critical infrastructure and measure radiation around a facility, such as a nuclear power plant.

Rapiscan Systems Announces New Radiation Detection Capabilities for Walk-Through Metal Detectors | Rapiscan Systems

Rapiscan Systems Announces New Radiation Detection Capabilities for Walk-Through Metal Detectors

December 14, 2015 TORRANCE, Calif.

Addition of high-performance, gamma and neutron radiation detection features offer new capabilities for Metor product line

Rapiscan Systems, a leading global supplier of security inspection systems, today announced the addition of radiation detection capabilities to its line of Metor walk-through metal detection products. The design of the radiation detection option employs technology, components and concepts used on other Rapiscan radiation detection products, which have been proven in deployments for many years at airports, seaports and border crossings worldwide.

In the last two decades the International Atomic Energy Agency has received reports of nearly 2,500 incidents of trafficking radioactive materials. The integration of radiation detection into Rapiscan’s walk-through metal detectors helps to prevent these types of incidents by giving operators the ability to simultaneously screen people for metallic and radioactive material threats.

“To stay ahead of the challenging and evolving threat environment, we have made creating smarter, integrated technology a priority,” said Pak Chin, President, Rapiscan Systems. “Our radiation detection option is an effective solution for countering very real threats such as smuggling of nuclear materials that are used to build atomic weapons, and commercial and medical isotopes, which are key ingredients in dirty bombs. We are proud to add these capabilities to our existing top-of-the-line metal detection products.”

By fully integrating Rapiscan’s advanced radiation detection capabilities with existing Metor walk-through metal detector products, there is no change in the people screening operation or checkpoint configuration. With the added radiation inspection capabilities, customers walking through the metal detector are also screened for gamma radiation or gamma and neutron radiation. When the system is not occupied by a person being screened, it automatically measures the surrounding background radiation. Radiation alarms are clearly signaled with lights and sounds to alert operators.

The new integrated radiation detection features are compatible with the Metor 6MMetor 6S and Metor 6E products. Radiation detection is available with new Metor units or as a field-deployable addition to existing units. The new capabilities meet the radiation detection requirements of applicable standards for radiation inspection of people, including ANSI N42.35IEC 62244, and IAEA standards for pedestrian security inspection.

(AS&E) has discontinued its patent infringement case as the case relates to the Rapiscan RXV Reflexion Vehicle (RXV).   AS&E had brought suit claiming infringement of a UK patent, but discontinued its case against the RXV on the basis of a description of the RXV and the way in which it works.

With the discontinuation of its case against the RXV, Rapiscan reports that AS&E’s case is now reduced to allegations of infringement that are apparently directed against a historical non-working prototype that was never completed and never sold.

The RXV is a rapid deployment mobile inspection platform that utilizes backscatter X-rays to identify certain threats and contraband items such as explosives, narcotics, stowaways, tobacco and currency.  Jules Anderson, Sales Director at Rapiscan Systems Ltd., stated, “The RXV was designed to be unlike any other product of its type.  We designed the RXV from the ground up to meet the needs of today’s customers, and tailored the RXV to suit modern methods of inspection.”
