The Rapiscan VEDS GC Series is a neutron inspection system that automatically detects the presence of explosives and drugs in cargo. It uses proprietary Rapiscan Systems technology to detect commercial, military and most homemade explosives. As an option, chlorinated Class A drugs, such as cocaine hydrochloride and heroin hydrochloride, can also be found. It is designed to detect significant quantities of these threats, such as commonly used in a vehicle bomb or hidden in cargo.
The easy-to-use unit is configured as a gantry system with one VEDS head moving along a track. The head contains the Cf-252 isotopic neutron source. An unoccupied parked vehicle is inspected as the head moves past it. After turning the truck around, the second side is inspected in a similar manner. With the optional second VEDS head, the vehicle can be inspected from both sides in a single pass. When this “sweep” scan is completed, the likely location of threat material is automatically indicated on the simple graphical user interface (GUI) to the operator in the nearby control room. A spot scan of the suspicious area is then performed to confirm the presence of the threat. The Rapiscan VEDS GC Series unit can easily be disassembled and moved to a different inspection site.
