Rapiscan’s 2011 Global Distributor’s Conference – Observations from Day 1

Each year, Rapiscan Systems brings together a group of leading security solutions providers from around the world – the partner companies that make up our global distributor network – to discuss the latest issues in the security industry as well as regulatory trends and new technologies. This year the conference is being held in London, the site of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games one year from now.

Fittingly, our conference began with a presentation by one of the London Olympic Organizing Committee’s senior executives. He made the point that the London Olympics will be one of the most important events in terms of security in the coming year. There will be hundreds of venues and events and millions of attendees and participants that will all need to be screened with a minimum amount of disruption. He pointed out that one key trend in event security is the need to combine multiple screening modalities into a seamless checkpoint operation – to be able to inspect for threats in packages, vehicles and on a person, using different technologies such as x-ray screening, metal detectors and explosive trace detection. But, he also noted that security providers such as Rapiscan – which will provide the security screening systems for the London 2012 games – have to anticipate the operational and logistical needs of the games and be more than just technology providers.
