London 2012 – Screening test is positive

Rapiscan Systems, the Official Security Equipment and Systems Supplier for London 2012, has taken part in 42 test events in 28 venues covering all Olympic disciplines and six Paralympic sports in less than twelve months. The screening equipment performed well, successfully meeting the organisers’ security specifications in a wide range of challenging environments. Over 2,000 pieces of equipment have been delivered on time and within the agreed budget to create over 10 times the number of checkpoint lanes required by any major multi-terminal European Airport.

The test events involved the security screening of hundreds of thousands of spectators (350,000 in total) and their baggage as they watched 8,000 athletes compete in Olympic and Paralympic venues across the UK. Major event security screening is a very different environment to that experienced in an airport. Sporting spectators arrive en-masse, only shortly before the event start time and speed of throughput is important in order for them to be seated in time for their chosen event. However, the need for high levels of effective security screening at such a high profile international event is paramount.

The 183 days of sporting competition at the test events have proved that Rapiscan Systems equipment is effective and delivers both the specified levels of security screening and the required throughput of spectators. We now look forward to the challenge of securing the real events themselves.
