Awards Mark Company’s Ability To Enable Next Generation of Weapons of Mass Destruction Detection

Rapiscan Systems, a leading global supplier and manufacturer of security inspection systems for homeland security applications, announced today that Rapiscan Laboratories, its research and development division, was awarded multiple Exploratory Research Program contracts by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO). By conducting transformational research and development initiatives, DNDO’s objective is to enlist technology leaders to advance the country’s nuclear materials detection capabilities. With its leading scientists and engineers, Rapiscan has secured contracts that are incrementally funded for a total obligated value of $2.7 million with additional options that could be exercised for a total value of up to $7 million.

The awards will explore topics relevant to the DNDO Global Nuclear Detection Architecture mission of countering the nuclear terrorism threat. Specifically, in one of the projects, Rapiscan Laboratories will team with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory to study the data fusion of multiple fission signatures for low exposure vehicle inspection. The other projects involve developing a system to detect shielded nuclear material by collaborating with Arktis Radiation Detectors Ltd in Switzerland and involve developing second generation Auto-ZTM algorithms for detecting high-Z material

Additionally, the obligated value also includes follow-on awards for existing contracts that focus on shielded nuclear alarm resolution.

Ajay Mehra, President of Rapiscan Systems, stated, “These contracts require the unique combination of experience in high-energy x-ray imaging, as well as nuclear, mechanical and electrical engineering that our team possesses. When successfully completed, these threat detection and verification technologies will provide additional inspection capabilities that better protect our nation from weapons of mass destruction being smuggled into the country. The innovative research at Rapiscan Laboratories continues to be at the forefront of combating some of this country’s most serious security threats.”
